GreenMetric-2023: Poltava Polytechnic enters the TOP-10 most environmentally friendly Ukrainian universities

The University of Indonesia has released the annual UI GreenMetric-2023 ranking of the world’s universities, which presents higher education institutions from around the world that are implementing “green” solutions and innovations. This year’s international ranking included 1,183 universities from different parts of the world.

Among 19 Ukrainian higher education institutions included in the ranking, Poltava Polytechnic took 10th place.

National University “Yuri Kondratyuk Poltava Polytechnic” has been included in the UI GreenMetric international ranking since 2017 and occupies a top leading position in the ranking among Ukrainian higher education institutions. Last year, Poltava Polytechnic confirmed the status of the most environmentally friendly university and its position in the TOP-10 among Ukrainian higher education institutions.

The international UI GreenMetric World University Rankings ranks universities around the world according to the campuses’ environmental friendliness, taking into account the main criteria, including: the introduction of environmental education components in the educational process, projects to improve energy efficiency, university policies regarding rational consumption and energy saving, rational use of water resources, storage and processing of waste, assessment of the area of green spaces on the territory, etc. The ranking is aimed at promoting academic discourse on sustainability in education and campus greening, social change related to the university, taking into account the goals of sustainable development, self-assessment of campus sustainability for universities around the world, informing the government, international and local environmental protection agencies and society about the programs of sustainable development on campus.

The main purpose of the ranking is not only to maintain the environmental sustainability of universities around the world, but also to draw the attention of university management and stakeholders to global climate change and thus promote the balanced use of energy, water, waste recycling and the development of ecological transportation. Such activities require changing strategies and attention to environmental sustainability, as well as economic and social issues.

“We have successfully demonstrated the improvement of our strategic measures to achieve the sustainable development goals in all aspects of the university’s activities!

Over the past two years, the Poltava Polytechnic started training specialists in the field of “green energy”, the university became a leader in the implementation of the EU Energy Efficiency Directive of comprehensive energy-efficient campuses renovation, and two stages of dendrological revitalization of the university park were implemented as well.

In addition to eco-infrastructure, the university actively supports eco-projects and promotes environmentally friendly ideas. I congratulate the team on a new achievement! We continue our work on creating the best conditions for learning, development and leisure!” – commented the rector, Professor Volodymyr Onyshchenko.
