The necessary implementation of  the USSR Law "On Language ..." in the education and scientific-research processes in Poltava Civil Engineering Institute led to the decision of the Academic Council, and Rector's order № 61 of 24 January 1991, to creation of  the first Department of Ukrainian Studies and Humanitarian Training in higher technical educational institutions in Ukraine.

In the 2012-2013 academic year, the department started graduating in the specialty 6.020105 "Documentation Science and Information Activity" for the qualifications of bachelor and was renamed the Department of Ukrainian studies, Culture and Documentation.

In 2015 the Department successfully passed accreditation of the bachelor degree course and licensing of Master’s degree programme (or program) in this specialty.

Founders of the Department – university administration, Humanitarian Department’s Councilor and Candidate of Historical Sciences, PhD, Associate Professor N. K. Kocherga.

From 1995 to 2002 N.K. Kocherha worked as a vice rector in humanitarian education and training, actively participated in the development of the concept of educational activity among scientific and teaching staff, in the creation of student government, and in the design of the university symbols and emblems.

Through her activity the exhibiting of the University’s history has been modernized, upgraded and extended. The museum then became a center of Ukrainian studies, cultural and educational work for students and the teaching team.

In 1998, according to results of the regional competition among public museums of higher education institutions in Poltava region, this museum was awarded the status of "folk", and in 2008 its status was confirmed.

Since 2015 the department has been headed by Doctor of Historical Sciences, Associate Professor Perederiy Iryna Hryhoriyivna. The Department successfully completed accreditation and obtained a license to provide educational services for the Master's Degree Field of Knowledge 0201 "Culture" Specialty 8.02010501 "Documentation Science and Information Activity" in 2015.  According to the resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine №266 of 29 April 2015 "On approving the list of disciplines and specialties, which conducts training of candidates of higher education" in the Field of Knowledge 02 "Art and Culture" specialty 029"Information, Library and Archives" was introduced .

2016 is the anniversary year for the Department of Ukrainian studies, Culture and Documentation. The friendly and talented scientific and pedagogical team celebrates 25 years of fruitful activity  this year.

The Department of Ukrainian Studies, Culture and Documentation is working in the field of scientific research of complex scientific theme " The spiritual culture of Ukraine and Poltava region (ХIХ-ХХ centuries.)" And about the theme which corresponds to its profile as graduating - "Document and Information Communication in modern globalization challenges." Every year the department held scientific and practical conferences, round tables on relevant topics – from regional to nationwide. In particular, in April 2015 the department was conducted in Internet-mode All-Ukrainian scientific-practical conference "The culture of Repressed Ukraine: regional dimension"; in November 2014 took place All-Ukrainian scientific-practical seminar "Actual problems of modern Documentation: methodology and practice of training specialists in documentation and information activities"; in December 2015 the Department organized All-Ukrainian scientific-practical Internet-conference "Document and information communication in the context of globalization: state, problems and prospects".

Perederiy in April 2013 in a Specialized Academic Council for the Defence of dissertations in T.H. Shevchenko Kiev National University has successfully defended a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Historical Sciences on "Vyacheslav Lipinski in socio-political and scientific life of Ukraine and Ukrainian emigration of the first third of the twentieth century.".

In April 2014 in Specialized Academic Council for the Defence of dissertations of the G.S. Skovoroda Kharkiv National Pedagogical University has successfully defended dissertation for the degree of a Candidate of Philological Sciences, senior lecturer L.I. "Documentation and Information Activity" is a relatively new area of training specialists. This specialty is listed in European specialties that meet the Bologna process, which means that in the context of Ukraine integration into the European educational space, the best students will be able to improve their professional skills abroad and turn into reality the wise aphorism: "The one, who owns the information, owns the world."

The development of modern industry and service sector requires highly skilled specialists who can effectively solve problems of document-information supporting in all spheres of social activity. Documentation experts are those who provide the operation of administrative and management documentation at the appropriate professional level. PoltNTU provides out a military training program for students as reserve officers at Kharkiv Air Force Ivan Kozhedub University and at the Military Institute of Telecommunications and Information of the National University of Ukraine (KPI). Classes with selected on a contract basis students are carried out within 3 - 4 courses. Training is fee-based.  After successful completion of military training students are assigned to the rank of "Lieutenant of the reserve". Military training is taken into account in joining civil service departments in Ministry of Internal Affairs and State Automobile Inspectorate.

The Department of Ukrainian Studies, Culture and Documentation actively works with foreign students not only during the educational process providing studying of Ukrainian (Russian) language as a foreign one, but also in extracurricular time. Thus, members of the department organized consulting to improve the quality of knowledge of Ukrainian (Russian) language as a foreign one, and actively work developing methodological guides in foreign language.

Every year the Department carries out an Olympiad in Ukrainian (Russian) language as a foreign language. On December 2nd 2015 the first stage of the All-Ukrainian student competition was held. The event was attended by 12 I and II year foreign students from all university faculties. The competition tasks covered the entire course of Ukrainian grammar (phonetics, vocabulary, lexicology, morphology, syntax and punctuation) and oral story on one of the proposed topics.

I place - Famenhe Kloter, a 205-NG group (Cameroon);

II place - Bashir Mohamed, a 103-NG group (Sudan);

III place - Dridi Saussen, a 204-NG group (Tunisia).

Pedagogic work is also carried out. In particular, annual Days of native language have become traditional, where foreign students are acquainted with the culture, history, customs and traditions of their homeland in Ukrainian.

 

Student’s research work

Members of the department actively work with students over preparation and defence of scientific works, attracting to participation in contests, Olympiads, conferences, creative competitions.

The best students of  humanitarian, architectural, financial and economic, civil engineering, oil and gas and environmental management and other faculties win convincing victories at the International, All-Ukrainian and regional competitions, in the subject Olympiads; make interesting reports at different level scientific conferences.

In particular, only within two last academic years the leading teachers of department of an Ukraine country studies and document science have prepared the following winners and prize-winners:

 Serhiy Boiko (current undergraduate of the humanitarian faculty  , group 201-PGD) was awarded by the laureate diploma of the II-nd stage of Ukrainian student Olympiad on specialty "documentology and information activities".

Irina Khokhlova and Anastasia Momot (students of the faculty of management and business) were awarded with the diplomas of Ukrainian student olympiads on psychology 2015 (Odessa, South Ukrainian national pedagogical K. D. Ushinsky  University), scientific adviser – Candidate of Philosophical Sciences, assistant professor Martynyuk Volodymyr Mykytovych.

 

Elizaveta Zatuliviter (group 401-GD, humanitarian faculty  ) in 2014 was awarded by the diploma of III-rd degree in all-Ukrainian competition of student academic  papers on historical Sciences (Ostrog, national University "Ostrog Academy"), scientific adviser – PhD of Historical Sciences, , assistant professor  Iryna G. Perederiy.

 

Veronika Rohova (group 401-GD, humanitarian faculty) in 2014 took 2nd place in the regional stage of the Taras Shevchenko International linguistic-literary contest of pupils and students.

Vitalina Solodovnyk (group 401-GD) won a diploma of the winner of Ukrainian student olympiads in Ukrainian language 2014 in the nomination " A connoisseur of Ukrainian grammar" (Kharkov, the Kharkov national pedagogical G. S. Skovoroda University), scientific adviser – candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, assistant professor  Lysenko Alla Vasylivna.

 

Domnenko Tetiana is a winner of regional and of the Republican stage of linguistic-literary contest of pupils and students named after Taras Shevchenko.
