The Department of Reinforced Concrete and Masonry Structures and Strength of Materials provides training for educational levels "Bachelor", "Master" and "Doctor of Philosophy".

Implementation of educational process, scientific research and design work is provided by 14 lecturers, 100% of them have academic degrees, and by support staff of 2 persons.

 

In order to solve the urgent problems of flow in building highly qualified specialists in the field of reinforced concrete in many universities in the country the departments of reinforced concrete and masonry structures were created at that time. This department was established on June 25, 1960 in Poltava Institute of Engineers Agricultural.

Since 1960, the newly created Department of Reinforced Concrete and Masonry Structures actively involved not only in the educational process, but also weighty declared itself in research and development work.

The first head of the Department of Reinforced Concrete and Masonry Structures in 1960 became associate professor Mikhailo Stepanovych Toryanyk.

In this position he has worked until 1975. Having well-adjusted the learning process, he has created a research school on investigation of reinforced concrete structures in complex types of deformations, which now is well-known both in Ukraine and abroad.

After M.S. Toryanyk retired the Department was managed: by Makarenko L.P.,candidate of technical sciences, associate professor – from 1975 to 1978; Vakhnenko P.F., laureate of the State Prize in Science and Technology, doctor of technical sciences, professor – from 1978 to 1985; Rudenko Y.M., candidate of technical sciences, associate professor – in 1985; Pavlikov A.M., doctor of technical sciences, professor – from 1985 to 1990;  Mitrofanov V.P., candidate of technical sciences, associate professor – from 1990 to 1997. Since 1997 management of the department was again assigned to doctor of technical sciences, professor Pavlikov A.M.

The Department received its present name on 7 December 2005, when it was joined with Department of Strength of Materials. Until the combining of the two departments the first head of the Department of Strength of Materials (from 1954 to 1975) was Hilobok G.K., candidate of technical sciences, associate professor. Later the Department was headed: by Kurenkov A.F., candidate of technical sciences, associate professor (from 1975 to 1981); Tolstopyatov R.V., candidate of technical sciences, associate professor (from 1981 to 1986); Horyk O.V., doctor of technical sciences, professor (from 1986 to 2004); Muravlov V.V., candidate of technical sciences, associate professor (from 2004 to 2005).

In 2003 with the support of the rector of the University, doctor of technical sciences, professor Onishchenko O.G. at the Department a training for specialization "Exploitation, repair and strengthening of buildings and structuress" was organized. This specialization is the only one in Ukraine and it aims to prepare specialists in reliable maintenance service buildings.

More than 50 applicants of the chair defended the dissertations. Directly on the Department 4 doctoral dissertations were defended (M.S. Toryanik, P.F. Vakhnenko, S.I. Rogoviy, A.M. Pavlikov). All members of the Department were offer at postgraduate course.

The first graduate students were L.I. Serdiuk (Professor, Head of the Department of Theoretical Mechanics PoltNTU until June 2009) and YE.M. Babich (now Professor, Head of Department of Engineering Structures of the National University of Water Management and Natural Resources in Rivne).

Now professor A.M. Pavlikov and associate professor O.O. Dovzhenko  carry out scientific work of postgraduate students.

Six postgraduate students of the Department – YE.M. Babich, P.F. Vakhnenko, A.M. Pavlikov, YE.V. Climenko, S.I. Rogoviy, O.V. Semko – continued the scientific way by protecting doctoral thesis in "Building Constructions, Buildings and Structures." But many others devoted theirs lifes to the research activities not only in construction but also in other scientific fields. L.I. Serdiuk defended his thesis in two specialties – "Machines and Machine Parts" and "Dynamics, Strength of Machines, Devices and Equipment"; O.V. Gorik defended his thesis in "Solid Mechanics"; M.YE. Rogoza - defended his thesis in "Economy, Organization and Management of Enterprises." Seven postgraduate students of the Department became academics, ten – received the title of professor and many of them are working as Vice-rectors in Universities, deans of faculties and heads of departments, heads of government agencies, construction companies and other industries.

The Department of Reinforced Concrete and Masonry Structures and Strength of Materials of Poltava National Technical Yuriy Kondratyuk University provides a fundamental, scientific, professional and applied preparation on specialty code 192 "Building and Civil Engineering."

25 subjects are taught during their training. In recent years the Department provides educational training in these disciplines to 500 students from different courses, 25 masters’ theses are executed, graduates are consulted on all building specialties that exist in the university.

 All graduates are competitive in the labor market have real employment opportunities at leading domestic and foreign enterprises (organizations, institutions, firms, companies, etc.) and are provided with work fully, according to their specialism and may hold such positions in accordance with the education and qualification level.

The most talented graduates can enter and study at the post-graduate and doctoral courses in Poltava National Technical Yuriy Kondratyuk University.

One of the areas of scientific research of the Department Reinforced Concrete and Masonry Structures and Strength of Materials is improvement of Uncapital Ungrider Frame Structure for its widespread introduction in housing of Ukraine.

Experimental testing of slabs, columns and staircases of Uncapital Ungrider Frame Structure were conducted in the laboratory of the Department for the first time in Ukraine.

Scientists of the Department developed specifications for concrete products (slabs, columns and stairways) of Uncapital Ungrider Frame Structure of residential buildings. The results of research in improving the frame structures and junctions supported by patented utility model.

16-storey residential buildings are commissioned on the avenue of Bohdan Khmelnytsky, 21, construction on Zhovtneva Street, 60D in Poltava is completed, large-scale construction in village Rozsoshentsi is continued using the scientific development engineering of lecturers of the Department.

The lecturers of the Department conduct the advanced study in industry of research of reinforced concrete and stone structures under mixed deformations (leader – ScD, professor A.M. Pavlikov), and also support destruction and deformation of concrete and reinforced concrete elements which test mixed heterogeneous mode of deformations at different character of external influences (PhD, associate professors of S.M. Mikitenko, O.O. Dovzhenko).

The members of the Department have got 38 copyright certificates and 6 patents on the inventions of different type.

The department staff supports creative copulas and conducts economic-contractual work with establishments, factories, industrial and agricultural  enterprises. Last years many projects of reconstruction of production objects were developed, building inspections were performed and over 100 build objects were reconstructed in Poltava and other areas of Ukraine. With participation of students were projected spectator stands of Poltava karting, laboratory corps named «L» and academic building named «A» and «F» of the University. The Poltava stadium «Vorskla» was reconstructed.

Annually scientific developments of the department make it possible to defend  1 – 2 candidates’ thesis.

The Department has laboratory facilities with total area of 798.6 m2. One of them – the most advanced laboratory in Ukraine, it is designed to provide laboratory work of academic disciplines, testing and explore reinforced concrete and masonry structures.

This laboratory with dimensions 18 x 36 m is equipped by a crane beam carrying capacity 10 kN, a bridge crane carrying capacity of 250 kN, modern computer technologies, unique and testing devices, power handling equipment for the study work of the structures under static and dynamic loads up to 5000 kN.

Teachers of the Department participate in International scientific, scientific and practical conferences, publish articles on the results of scientific research in foreign collections that are part of the International Science Metrics Database.



Our teaching stuff participates in International scientific and practical conferences, publishes articles on the results of scientific research in the international professional journals. Graduates who defended diploma or magister's works by directing the department employed in Ukraine and abroad.

Students of specialty code 192 "Building and civil engineering" are essential knowledge for the design of buildings, works in the construction, testing and diagnosis of buildings, reconstruction and strengthening, operation and maintenance of buildings and technology and construction organization. They have the necessary knowledge to design research and creation of new designs, developing new technological approaches to making designs and construction sector. Teaching students associated with scientific work in the laboratories of the department with modern equipment and computer software.

The student scientific group "Modeling of building structures using computer programs" under the guidance of Ph.D., associate professor A.V. Gasenko operates at the Department. Active participants of the group conduct research and take part in conferences and seminars.

The department provides full training courses, organization and passing the state exam, scientific management and master's theses defence for foreign students in foreign language according to curriculum.

Lecturers of the Department Harkava O.V., Nosach A.B., Pinchuk N.M. and Fedorov D.F. conduct lectures, practical and laboratory classes and provide scientific supervision of master's theses of foreign students in English.

The language level in English of these teachers is confirmed by certificates B2 on the CEFR European system.

Teachers of the Department engage students of 1 – 5 courses to participate in the Annual Scientific Conference of Professors, Teachers, Researchers and Students of the University for the section "Reinforced concrete and stone structures and strength of materials". The results of the joint work of students and teachers are published as abstracts book. Each year our students participate in the Contest of student scientific researches, in the Contest of master’s theses.

The Department organizes the Annual 1st stage and from 2011 to 2016 the 2nd Stage of Ukrainian Student Olympiad on Strength of Materials. Every year 35 teams from different universities of Ukraine took part in the 2nd stage of the Olympiad.

The first stage of Ukrainian Student Olympiad on discipline "Strength of Materials" in 2016-2017 academic year was held at the department in December 2016.

As a result of intense struggle the second-year students of the Civil Engineering Faculty won: the third place went to Sergiy Kalinichenko and Olexander Krutybich, Olexandra Tsiganok received the second place, the first is Dmitro Turchenko.

 

The winners of the first stage of Ukrainian Olympiad on discipline "Strength of Materials" Alexander Krutybich, Sergey Kalinichenko and Alexandra Tsiganok

 

Tsiganok Oleksandra and Turchenko Dmitro took the 7th place among 26 participants in the 2nd stage of Ukrainian Olympiad on discipline "Strength of Materials", which is held by Odessa State Academy of Civil Engineering and Architecture in 2016-2017 academic year.

Congratulations to the participants of the Olympiad!

Implementation of the master's thesis at the Department of Reinforced Concrete and Masonry Structures and Strength of Materials is based on the latest achievements in the field of design and research of building structures. Architectural designs, calculations, testing and processing of the results of research is carried out by standard methods consistent with current norms.

Qualification master's work may be the solution an independent scientific tasks or problems integrating design and scientific.

The theme of thesis should be concise, consistent with chosen profession, current task, direction of research of the Department of Reinforced Concrete and Masonry Structures and Strength of Materials and should points to the object and subject of research.
