   Architecture and Urban Construction Department was founded in October 1938 as Architecture Department. In 1961 it was renamed to Architecture of Civil and Industrial Buildings Department. Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Olexandr Mogylat became the first head of the Department. Since 2006 Department is named as an Architecture and Urban Construction Department. Doctor of Technical Sciences, laureate of State prize of Ukraine in science and engineering in 2012, Professor Olexandr Semko was head of the department from 2007 to September 2014.

   Department trains engineers in the following specialties:

Urban construction and municipal services;

Industrial and civil engineering;

 

   Highly skilled specialists in civil engineering are trained in educational qualification levels of:

Bachelor of Science (BSc);

Specialist;

Magister of Science (MSc).

  Department teaches principal courses in ekistics, architectural and constructional composition of buildings and structures, reconstruction and technical maintenance of buildings and structures, as well as principles of building thermal physics, acoustics and light analysis for Civil engineering, Sanitary engineering and Architectural faculties’ students.

 

   Scientific researches on the Architecture and Urban Construction Department are hold in the following lines:

- technical states and risks of complex load-bearing and enclosure structures;

- development of enclosure structures and floors of industrial refrigerators with predictable service performance;

- facade structures, cold-formed light steel structures;

- insolation, nature lighting and traffic noise influence on space-and-planning and structural solutions of dwelling houses.

   Learner’s guides on course projects, students’ self-instruction work and lecture materials study by full-time and by-correspondence students are developed for all lectured on the Department specialities.

Department staff in 2015

  The Architecture and Urban Construction Department was founded in October 1938 as the Architecture Department. Later it was separated from the Department Of Agricultural Engineering and became profiling in graduate projection.

  First head of the Department was Associate Professor Anatoliy Lipiavkin.

  In 1938 Department was headed by Professor Mikhaylo Zatsepin.

  In 1947 Associate Professor Mikhaylo Anischenko became the head of the Architecture Department. In 1950 Department was leaded by the Candidate of Architectural Sciences Associate Professor Ivan Burlakov. In 1961 the Architecture Department was renamed as the Department of Architecture of Civil and Industrial Buildings. Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Olexandr Mogylat (on the photo) became the head of Department.

In 1966 Department started graduating students on speciality «1201 - Architecture».

In 1973 Department of Architectural Design was separated from Department of Architecture of Civil and Industrial Building.

In 1995 due to the opening of the speciality «Urban construction and municipal services», Department was named as Architecture of Buildings and Urban Planning Department.

In 2004-2006 Associate Professor Valeriy Cherniavskiy, PhD was an acting head of Department.

Since 2006 Department is named as Architecture and Urban Construction Department.

In 2006-2007 Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Stanislav Rogoviy headed the Department.

   Since 2007-2014, Doctor of Technical Sciences, member of Ukrainian Building Academy, Professor Olexandr Semko is the head of the Department (on the photo).

Professor Olexandr Semko, ScD

Doctor of Technical Sciences (ScD) on speciality 05.23.01 “Building structures, buildings and constructions”, Professor

Was head of the department from 2007 to September 2014. Lectures courses “Architecture of buildings and structures”, “Technical maintenance of buildings and structures”, “Introduction into graduation projecting”.

Tutor of undergraduate and postgraduate students. Professor Semko is an author of more than 300 papers, including manual “Composite steel and reinforced concrete structures”, 4 monographs, 2 normative documents, 15 inventor's certificates.

Sphere of scientific interest: study on reliability of complex constructions when ensuring and taking into consideration joint action of load-bearing and enclosure elements; research on constructions formed hereupon reinforcement and reconstruction of buildings and structures reliability; examination of insurance risks under designing, building, reconstruction and reinforcement of buildings and structures.

Laureate of 2012 State prize of Ukraine in science and engineering.

In 25 years of production, scientific and educational activity Professor Semko solved a number of scientific and practical problems of probabilistic design of existent and projectable building structures. He developed, designed and introduced into production quite a number of new types of reinforced steel-concrete precast and cast-in-situ structures.

Viktor Rudenko, Candidate of Architectural Sciences (PhD)

Tutor of undergraduate and postgraduate students. Associate Professor Rudenko has published more than 20 scientific works.

Olena Filonenko, PhD

Senior Lecturer of Architecture and Urban Construction Department

Olena Borysenko

Assistant Lecturer of Architecture and Urban Construction Department

Works in Department since 2009. Lectures courses “Architecture of buildings and structures”, “Civil engineering physics”, “Basis of computer-aided design”, “Computer technologies in buildings and structures design”, “Ekistics and transport”. Olena Borysenko is an author of 16 scientific works.

Ms. Borysenko is a third place laureate of Contest of best scientific works on subject “Let’s make Ukraine energy-efficient” under Leonid Kuchma Presidential Foundation “Ukraine”.

Nataliya Magas

Senior Laboratory Assistant of Architecture and Urban Construction Department

Works in Department since 2009. As a part-time Assistant lecturer lectures courses “Architecture of buildings and structures”, “Ekistics and transport”.

Architecture and Urban Construction Department graduates students on the following specialities:

 

«Industrial and civil engineering»

Students of this speciality acquire skills for designing, building and exploitation of buildings and structures, assessment of technical states, development of overhaul and reconstruction measures. Students learn to use normative literature, determine the technical state of buildings and constructions, calculate and design new constructions and those, which are reinforced, perform drawings in compliance with operating normative specifications.

 

Specialists can work as a design engineers in design organizations, a foremen or construction superintendents on building sites, as well as a customer’s representative.

 

«Urban construction and municipal services»

Students on this speciality get skills in the rational planning of new reconstruction of existing city estates, in reconstruction of buildings and constructions in compliance with operating housing development specifications.

Specialists can work on positions of design engineer in development organizations, as foremen or construction superintendents.

Training of highly skilled specialists in engineering goes in the following educational levels:

 

Bachelor of Science, (BSc) (qualification: bachelor of building) – educational level of professional, which got general technical background, fundamental and professionally-oriented knowledge and skills on own speciality (basic higher education) on the basis of complete general secondary education, and which is able to solve typical professional tasks, that are specified for proper positions in certain sector of the national economy.

 

Terms of studying – 4 years.

 

Main places of employment: First of all, bachelor is prepared for receiving a complete higher education in civil engineering. These professionals may hold a position of lower technical and engineering employees and work under the direction of civil engineer, or, case of field experience, work independently on enterprises and construction organizations of different pattern of ownership as a foreman or superintendent.

 

Specialist (qualification: civil engineer) educational level of professional, which achieved special skills and knowledge on the basis of bachelor level, have certain experience of their use for solving difficult professional tasks, that are specified for the proper positions in certain sector of the national economy.

 

Terms of studying – 1 year after receiving an educational level of bachelor.

 

Main places of employment: specialist, unlike a bachelor, has complete professional background for unassisted work on a chosen speciality and can work as a customer’s representative, designer or a civil engineer in organizations of different pattern of ownership forms.

 

Master of Science (MSc) (qualification: master of civil engineering) – educational level of professional, which got deep special skills and knowledge of innovative type on the basis of bachelor or specialist level, has certain experience of it’s using for solving the complex professional tasks in the certain sector of the national economy. Educationally-professional program for training a holder of master’s degree includes advanced fundamental, humanitarian, socio-economic, psychologically-pedagogical, special, scientific and practical grounding.

 

Terms of studying – 1 year after the receiving an educational level of bachelor or specialist.

Main places of employment: holder of master’s degree has a background oriented mostly on research efforts and teaching work, but also can execute all of the functions of specialist. This professional has an advantage in scientist’s and lecturer’s vacancies competitions.

   On the basis of Architecture and Urban Construction Department functions the scientific school «Technical states and risks of complex load-bearing and enclosure structures”, leaded by the Doctor of Technical Sciences Professor Olexandr Semko, head of the Department.

 

Research is carried out since 2004 on the next problems:

- study on the reliability of complex constructions when ensuring and taking into consideration joint action of load-bearing and enclosure elements;

- research on constructions formed hereupon reinforcement and reconstruction of buildings and structures reliability;

- examination of insurance risks under designing, building, reconstruction and reinforcement of buildings and structures.

 

   The goal of research is the reliability enhancement and materials consumption decrease of building structures, optimization of structural solutions of buildings’ frames.

   As a result of the recent research steel and composite building frames has been developed, which enable to accelerate the construction works and decrease the building value.

   At the present time research activities on the problems of joints and bonding techniques in composite steel and reinforced concrete structures are in progress.

   The developments are introduced on many objects in Ukraine and Russian Federation.

   Scientific effort of the Department in 2011-2012 academic year was concentrated in such forms and directions: budgetary, publishing activity, dissertation works execution, research efforts of students under the direction of lecturers, participating in scientific conferences, entering of creative contracts, guidance work according to thematic plan of research works, which are executed within the limits of basic working hours of Department’s personnel.

   The Department is highly associated with Ukrainian Zonal Scientific-Research and Design Institute for Civil Engineering, Poltava Miskbudproekt, with a number of related Departments of Ukrainian institutes, including the Department of Town Planning of Kharkiv NAME, Department of Architectural Constructions of Kyiv NUCEA, Lviv Polytechnic National University and Lutsk State Technical University. Department signed an Association Agreement with the RUE “Institute BelSRIC” - the Scientific and Research Center (Brest, Republic of Belorussia).

   The Department lectures basic courses in ekistics, architectural and structural composition of buildings and constructions, reconstruction and technical operation of buildings and structures, also teaches the basis of civil engineering thermal physics, acoustics and light engineering for students on Civil engineering, Sanitary engineering and Architectural faculties.

Speciality 05.23.01 - "Building structures, buildings and structures"

   Investigated the probabilistic aspects of bearing capacity of complex constructions with combination of enclosure and load-bearing properties of steel and reinforced concrete structures and different types of their integration. Six new types of complex structural elements of industrial and civil buildings’ skeleton are developed with application of precast and cast-in-situ reinforced concrete and load-bearing domes. Methods of ensuring of joint action and anchorage of reinforced concrete are analyzed.

   Competitiveness is confirmed by applicated in manufacturing 18 frameworks. Authors received 10 patents for invention and useful model patents on the subject of study.

 

Research is dealing with the problems of:

  Results of our work have been reported on international conferences in Odessa, Kyiv, Lviv, Rivne, Kryviy Rig, Makyivka, Kharkiv etc. Also, the research results are represented in normative documents SBN V.2.6-98:2009 “Constructions of buildings and structures. Concrete and reinforced concrete structures.  General rules” and SBN V.2.6 -160:2010 “Constructions of buildings and structures. Composite steel and reinforced concrete structures. General rules”.

   Scientific efforts are held now by 1 Doctor of Technical Sciences, 6 Doctors of Philosophy, 5 postgraduate students and up to 10 students.

   In the issue of research, 10 PhD theses have been defended; more than 260 scientific papers have been published. Authors received 20 inventor's certificates and patents.

 

“Research into rational design and running conditions of building structures, buildings and structures under the influence of environmental and climatic factors”

 

Speciality 05.23.01 - "Building structures, buildings and structures"

 

Research is dealing with the following problems:

- insolation, nature lighting and traffic noise influence on space-and-planning and structural solutions of dwelling houses. The goal of research is to decrease specific building and maintenance value at the cost of rational use of urban areas by force of scientific research for further improvement of construction standards in urban development with the study of problems of insolation influence on temperature-wind conditions in local dwelling zones of different space-and-planning structure, as well as insolation, nature lighting and noise effect on habitation density subject to perfection level of space-and-planning solutions of buildings and other factors;

- industrial refrigerators’ floors and envelopes development with predictable operating properties. Development of engineering systems, which include envelope structures of refrigerators, bleeding of moisture from heat insulation for the purpose of ensuring the normative temperature-humidity conditions in food-storage compartments;

- energy-saving structural solutions of building envelopes. Improvement of energy-conserving structural solutions of laminated building envelopes on the ground of theoretical, experimental and field surveys on their operating properties. Procurement of their manufacturing application.

- structural optimization of operating properties of facade systems of buildings. Investigation into thermal protection properties of envelopes under their thermal modernization using facade systems;

- temperature-humidity conditions of envelopes under thermal modernization of housing;

“Research into functional and spatial structure of enterprises, investigation into the methods of city sanitary purification objects network formation”

 

   The goal of the research is to develop the methods of forming of industrial objects using system approach. And on this reason receiving industrial objects with a rational planning and functional structure, which would satisfy the up-to-date requirements.

   As a result of the research, a number of reports have been presented on university scientific conferences. The results of the work have been used in graduation projecting.

   The novelty of engineering developments is protected by patents and inventor’s certificates. Approbation of the received results is carried out on scientific conferences and symposia yearly. 

   Results of scientific investigations of department’s employee are represented in many papers in scientific journals and proceedings of international scientific-technical conferences.

   The best students, who show their desire to research activity, have a chance to continue their study for master’s degree or as postgraduate students. They are assigned to leading lecturers, which carry out appropriate activities by the main disciplines. Students are enlisted in such directions as:

- invention applications composition;

- writing reports and scientific articles;

- implementation of research or research sections while developing the course and graduation projects;

- taking part in All-Ukrainian competition for the best student scientific work in direction "Building and Architecture", "Energy-efficiency";

- participation in the competition for the best graduation project (master thesis);

- assistance to postgraduate students in conducting experiments;

- participation in the science club.

 

   In 2011, at the International Competition of graduation projects in Brest State Technical University, first  prize was received by graduation project made by Ivan Teghza on the subject "Atrium covering on the court between corpses A and F" (tutor - Professor O. Semko, ScD). In 2011, 4 students participated in the research work with pay.

   In 2012, in the National Contest Show of Master’s Theses  on speciality "Urban construction and municipal services”,  which took place in the Donbas National Academy of Civil Engineering and Architecture, Second place was taken by master’s thesis by Sergey Kryzhanivskyi on the subject "Design and operation of ski bases in suburban areas" (tutor - Docent O. Sklyarenko, PhD)
